Ƶ is saddened to share the passing of Trustee Dr. Julia “Julie” Snethen, a respected nurse scientist, educator, and member of the university’s Board of Trustees whose life and career were dedicated to improving the health and well-being of children and families.

Dr. Snethen served the university with distinction, bringing deep expertise in nursing, higher education, and research to her role as a trustee. Her thoughtful leadership and steady guidance were especially valued by Ƶ’s administration and the School of Nursing, where her professional insight helped strengthen programs preparing future generations of healthcare professionals.

“Julie brought wisdom, compassion, and an unwavering commitment to service to everything she did,” said Ƶ President Joel Shrock. “She believed deeply in the mission of Ƶ and in the power of education to change lives. Her voice and leadership will be greatly missed.”

A proud Ƶ alumna, Dr. Snethen earned her Bachelor of Science in Nursing from the university in 1982. She went on to receive a Master of Science in Nursing from the University of Texas Medical Branch in Galveston with concentrations in nursing education and pediatric nurse practitioner practice. She later completed her doctoral degree in nursing at the University of Wisconsin–Milwaukee, where her research examined adolescents’ perspectives on living with end-stage renal disease.

Throughout her distinguished career, Dr. Snethen developed a national reputation as a nurse scientist and scholar whose work focused on improving care for children with chronic conditions and supporting the health of families. Her research explored issues such as childhood obesity, family health environments, and the complex ways families make decisions about the health of their children. Much of her work focused on promoting health and wellness across childhood and adolescence and addressing health disparities, including research within Latino communities.

In addition to her research, Dr. Snethen was deeply committed to advancing maternal-child health through evidence-based practice and quality improvement initiatives. She collaborated with nurses across the United States and Canada through the Sigma Theta Tau International Maternal-Child Health Nursing Leadership Academy, supported by Johnson & Johnson, helping implement projects that improved maternal and infant care, strengthened breastfeeding outcomes, enhanced patient safety practices, and promoted early prenatal care in underserved communities.

Her work helped improve care for mothers, infants, and children in hospitals and healthcare systems across North America.

Through it all, Dr. Snethen remained deeply connected to her alma mater. In addition to serving on the Board of Trustees, she frequently shared her expertise with the University and returned to campus as the Fall 2019 commencement speaker, encouraging graduates to pursue lives of purpose and service.

Board of Trustees Chair, Michael Wiley ’83, shared: “Julie served Ƶ with remarkable dedication and heart. Her professional expertise and thoughtful perspective enriched the work of the Board, but just as importantly, she cared deeply about the students whose lives are shaped by this institution. She will be remembered with great respect and gratitude by all who had the privilege to serve alongside her and the impact she made on every corner of the university will continue to help shape the lives of students in the future.”

Beyond her professional accomplishments, Dr. Snethen was an active member of the Community of Christ and lived her faith through a life of service and compassion. Those who worked alongside her often spoke of her deep belief in the worth of every person and her conviction that every student should feel they truly belonged in the classroom, in their community, and in places of worship.

Her life reflected the values at the heart of Ƶ’s mission: learning, leadership, and service.

Ƶ extends its deepest condolences to Dr. Snethen’s husband Manny, their children, and the entire Snethen and Reyes families.

Services will be held Saturday, March 14, 2026 at 10:30 a.m. at Lamoni Community of Christ, Lamoni, IA.

To honor her lifetime of service and to help continue her dedication to educating students, Dr. Snethen’s family has established a memorial scholarship in her honor. Click here if you would like to support the Dr. Julia A. Snethen Nursing Endowed Scholarship.
