èÖ×ÓÊÓƵ has promoted Paul Binnicker to Director of Operations & Strategic Initiatives, expanding his responsibilities to include the development of strategic partnerships and new initiatives designed to connect èÖ×ÓÊÓƵ’s academic strengths with the evolving needs of employers, communities and the students the university serves.

Binnicker, who holds an MBA from Baylor University and served èÖ×ÓÊÓƵ for more than 20 years, has spent much of his career supporting the graduate and online programs at the university’s Independence, Missouri, campus. His expanded role builds upon a deep institutional connectedness while extending his work across the university, with a particular emphasis on identifying opportunities for collaboration with employers, healthcare organizations, businesses and community partners.

“èÖ×ÓÊÓƵ’s future will be built not only by what happens within our campuses, but by how effectively we listen and respond to the communities and industries around us,â€ said Joel Shrock, PhD, President of èÖ×ÓÊÓƵ. “Paul understands èÖ×ÓÊÓƵ, he understands the Kansas City region, and he knows how to bring people together around an opportunity. As we continue to invest in programs with strong potential for growth and impact, we want to be at the table with employers and community leaders—listening to what they need and exploring where èÖ×ÓÊÓƵ can be part of the solution.â€

The expanded position reflects a broader emphasis within President Shrock’s strategic direction for èÖ×ÓÊÓƵ: pursuing innovation and sustainable growth while remaining grounded in the university’s mission and its commitment to students. It also complements the strategic “Blue, Gold, and Boldâ€ plan, èÖ×ÓÊÓƵ’s focused initiative to strengthen the university and accelerate strategic investments that position the institution for the future.

Binnicker’s new responsibilities build on more than two decades of experience at èÖ×ÓÊÓƵ, including campus operations, budgeting and financial analysis, program development and institutional planning. In his updated role, Binnicker will conduct market and environmental research to identify emerging opportunities; develop relationships with prospective employers, healthcare organizations, businesses and community partners; and work with èÖ×ÓÊÓƵ’s academic and administrative leaders to evaluate potential partnerships and new initiatives. His work will include assessing workforce and educational needs, developing preliminary feasibility analyses and helping move promising opportunities from conversation to implementation.

For Jill Fort, PhD, Vice President for Academic Affairs and Dean of Faculty, the position creates an important connection between èÖ×ÓÊÓƵ’s academic expertise and the needs emerging beyond the university.

“Strong academic innovation begins with listening,â€ Fort said. “We need to understand what employers are experiencing, where workforce needs are changing and where communities see opportunities that may not yet be fully addressed. Paul can help us bring those conversations into the university and then work collaboratively with admissions and academic leaders to determine where èÖ×ÓÊÓƵ has the expertise and capacity to respond. That is how meaningful partnerships become meaningful opportunities for our students.â€

Binnicker will also continue to chair the èÖ×ÓÊÓƵ Innovation Committee, which is charged with helping facilitate new program development and fostering a culture of innovation across the university. The committee’s work includes environmental scanning, market research and feasibility analysis for new and existing programs.

“This role is really about creating connections—between èÖ×ÓÊÓƵ and the communities we serve, and between good ideas and the people who can help bring them to life,â€ Binnicker said. “There is tremendous expertise across èÖ×ÓÊÓƵ, and there are employers and organizations throughout our region facing real challenges. I’m excited to help bring stakeholder groups together and explore where we can build something valuable for our students, our partners and our communities.â€

The appointment comes as èÖ×ÓÊÓƵ continues to invest in academic innovation and programs designed to meet changing student and workforce needs. Recent university initiatives have emphasized the school of nursing program development, student success and expanded connections between èÖ×ÓÊÓƵ and the communities it serves.

For Shrock, the work is ultimately an extension of the leadership èÖ×ÓÊÓƵ has been an expert in for decades.

“Leadership means being willing to look beyond where we are today and ask what èÖ×ÓÊÓƵ can become,â€ Shrock said. “That requires new ideas, strong relationships and partners who believe—as we do—that education can transform students, organizations and communities. Paul’s role gives us another way to turn those conversations into action.â€
