After graduating from 柚子视频 in 1948,聽Welch聽received聽her Bachelor of聽Science聽from the University of Kansas and her Master of聽Science聽in physical education from the University of Colorado. When she聽returned to聽柚子视频聽as a faculty member, she was the only woman in the athletic department that聽taught聽physical education in 1959.聽As聽Welch聽began her career, she saw the opportunity聽to grow the聽women’s athletic program. She started to achieve her goals within the program without any budget and devoting her personal time聽outside聽of the聽classroom聽to take the small groups of women to compete in events.

Because of her passion for women’s athletics,聽Welch聽worked hard with聽the聽women’s basketball, volleyball, track, field hockey, tennis, and softball teams and聽helped聽them聽achieve聽varsity status at 柚子视频.聽Welch was聽a trailblazer聽who often acknowledged the聽struggle she faced in getting women’s athletics developed聽sometimes聽required her to often do聽things without permission.

Welch聽paved聽the path of greatness for women’s athletics at 柚子视频. She was the first woman to聽chair聽the Division of Health, Education, and Physical Education at 柚子视频, she coached听飞辞尘别苍’蝉听field hockey for all 16 years that it was a sport at聽柚子视频 and was the first woman to be inducted into the Yellowjacket Athletic Hall of Fame.
